Today we finished off the last 15 minutes of the video Earth's Treasures: Metals. We saw how both steel and aluminium help mankind to build both buildings and transportation. We learned that steel gets its strength from the carbon atoms that hide in between Iron atoms. We learned that the chemical symbol for iron is Fe and 26 on the periodic table. We also learned that aluminium chemical symbol is Al and 13 on the periodic table.
A couple of things of note. Here is the link to how to make a Samurai sword. We also discussed how a new foam metal can relate to a building material known and foam or air crete. Here is a link to a TED talk about the use of Air-crete. Finally we also talked about how a new polymer called graphene. This new polymer has the potential strength to be used as a tether to create a space elevator.
