Today we took the time to review how to use the periodic table. Please look at the copy below. Many students need to redo the quiz and we will look it over on Wednesday of next week. Please note that columns 1 and 2 as well as 17 and 18 have a new note underneath. This should be written down on your copy of the periodic table.
Column 1 and 2 have 1 extra electron and 2 extra electrons in their outer shell making them reactive .
Column 17 is short 1 electron so it is also very reactive because it needs an electron.
Column 18 has all the shells satisfied so they are nonreactive with other elements.
The class discussion was to be able to pull information from the periodic table. For instance, what is the atomic number for oxygen. You would go to column 17 period 2 to find this element and then use the key at the top of the table to understand what all of the data is.
