Today we read pp. 318-320 and continued with our discussion about the history of the atom. We learned about Ernest Rutherford and his discover of the nucleus as well as the two part of the nucleus the proton and neutron. He and his students tested Thomson's model using alpha particle being projected at a gold foil. We discussed that Rutherford model is like a solar system with the nucleus in the middle and electrons orbiting around it.
We then moved on to Niels Bohr a student of Rutherford. He came up with a new model that had the positively charged nucleus with the electrons orbiting in circular pattern with the higher energy electrons farther away from the center.
